40 Years of Statehood: Advancing Towards a Developed Arunachal, Contributing to a Developed India

Arunachal Pradesh marked a historic milestone as it celebrated its 40th Statehood Day, commemorating four decades since attaining full-fledged statehood on 20 February 1987. The celebrations across the State reflected pride in the journey so far and renewed determination for the road ahead.

At the state-level function held at Indira Gandhi Park, Itanagar, Governor K. T. Parnaik, Lt Gen (Retd.), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He unfurled the National Flag and took the salute of the Guard of Honour, marking the significance of the day with solemn dignity and patriotic fervour.

A Vision Aligned with a Developed India

Extending warm greetings to the people of Arunachal Pradesh, the Governor described Statehood Day not merely as a celebration, but as a moment for introspection, renewed resolve, and collective planning. He emphasised that the vision of a “Developed Arunachal” must remain integral to a “Developed India.”

Calling for the preservation of the State’s rich tribal heritage and cultural diversity, he stressed the need to safeguard the environment, ensure equal opportunities for youth and women, eliminate corruption, and promote peace and prosperity. He noted that the decisions taken today will shape future generations and urged transparent, accountable, and technology-driven governance.

Reflecting on Arunachal Pradesh’s journey, the Governor observed that despite challenging terrain, the State has made significant progress in education, healthcare, connectivity, and digital transformation while protecting its traditions. He appreciated the initiatives of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, and the Council of Ministers, and acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in accelerating development.

Describing Arunachal as a vital pillar of India’s strategic strength and a gateway under the Act East Policy, he highlighted initiatives such as digital land surveys and the Vibrant Border Villages Programme. Encouraging youth to become job creators, he reaffirmed that balanced development and environmental conservation are key to realising a truly developed Arunachal Pradesh.

Expanding Infrastructure, Strengthening Economic Prospects

Chief Minister Pema Khandu, in his address during the celebrations, made a significant announcement that the Union Cabinet has approved the 33.7-km four-lane Gohpur–Numaligarh corridor, featuring India’s first twin-tube underwater rail-cum-road tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River. This transformative project will significantly enhance connectivity and logistics for Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast region.

He also highlighted the launch of the Namchik-Namphuk coal block and the exploration of strategic minerals such as graphite, signalling expanding economic opportunities for the State. Calling upon the youth to actively contribute to the vision of Viksit Arunachal 2047, he encouraged constructive participation rooted in constitutional values.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein emphasised that the true strength of Arunachal lies in its unity in diversity, deeply rooted in culture, nature, and strong community values. He stressed responsible and inclusive development through education, women’s empowerment, forest conservation, and strengthening of national borders.

Exhibition stalls by government departments showcased public welfare initiatives, while Self-Help Groups and local entrepreneurs displayed indigenous products, adding vibrancy and enterprise to the celebrations.

Honouring Excellence and Dedicated Public Service

As part of the 40th Statehood Day celebrations, a State Awards Ceremony was held at the Durbar Hall, Lok Bhavan, Itanagar, where Governor K. T. Parnaik, Lt Gen (Retd.), conferred the State Gold and Silver Medals upon distinguished individuals and organisations for their outstanding service, exceptional courage, and exemplary contributions to Arunachal Pradesh.

The occasion also featured the presentation of the Chief Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration, recognising officers whose dedication, integrity, and commitment to people-centric governance continue to strengthen the State’s administrative framework.

Celebrations Across Districts: Unity in Diversity

The 40th Statehood Day was celebrated with enthusiasm and patriotic spirit across all districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

In Lower Subansiri district, Ziro-Hapoli MLA Hage Appa unfurled the National Flag in Ziro, highlighting the State’s transformation from a remote frontier region into a strategically important and fast-developing State. The release of the booklet Birds of Ziro by the Hapoli Forest Division and Birding Club Ziro celebrated the region’s rich biodiversity.

In East Siang district, celebrations at Pasighat featured cultural displays, commendation awards for meritorious public service, and the launch of Folk Ballads of Siang, preserving the region’s oral traditions.

Upper Subansiri, West Siang, Tirap, Dibang Valley, Lower Siang, West Kameng, Leparada, Lohit, Anjaw, Kra Daadi, and Upper Siang districts all marked the occasion with flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes, sports competitions, exhibitions, and felicitation of achievers in public service and sports.

Four Decades of Progress, A Future of Possibilities

From its days as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) to becoming a vibrant and strategically significant State, Arunachal Pradesh has traversed an inspiring journey over the past 40 years. Infrastructure expansion, improved connectivity, educational growth, healthcare development, and enhanced civic amenities have transformed lives across urban and rural landscapes.

Yet, as leaders across districts emphasised, Statehood Day is not only about celebrating achievements; it is about strengthening unity, preserving heritage, protecting the environment, and ensuring inclusive growth.

As Arunachal Pradesh steps into its fifth decade of statehood, the collective resolve remains firm: to build a peaceful, prosperous, and progressive Arunachal contributing meaningfully to the vision of a Developed India by 2047.
