Transforming Youth Skills for the Future
Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood (SDEL) Department, Government of Karnataka, organized the World Youth Skills Day 2022 celebrations at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on 14 July 2022.
In line with this year’s global theme of ‘Transforming Youth Skills for the Future’, the event saw the unveiling of several future-oriented initiatives of the Department. Many of the Karnataka Skill Development Corporation’s (KSDC) upcoming programmes and initiatives such as One District One Skill (ODOS), Karnataka Skill Connect Portal, Amrutha Munnade, and the E-Kaushalya LMS platform, were inaugurated by Shri Basavaraj S Bommai, the Honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka.
Dr C N Ashwathnarayan, the Honourable Minister for Higher Education, IT BT, Sci&Tech, and SDEL, Government of Karnataka; Dr S Selvakumar, IAS, Principal Secretary, SDEL Dept, and other heads of institutions under the SDEL department including Mrs Jyothi K, IAS, Commissioner, Commissionerate of Industrial Training and Employment; Ms Manjushree, IAS, Mission Director, Livelihood Mission; Mr Ashwin D Gowda, IRS, Managing Director, KSDC; Mr H Raghavendra, IRPS, Managing Director, Government Toolroom and Training Centre (GTTC); and Mr Basavaraj M Gotur, Director, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development of Karnataka (CEDOK) and other dignitaries graced the event.
Speaking at the event, the Hon’ble CM emphasized the importance of skills among youth and shared the vision of the state to make Karnataka the powerhouse for skilling in the country through greater integration of vocational training with general education. He also remarked that six government engineering colleges in Karnataka are being upgraded on par with IITs. The Hon’ble Minister for SDEL addressed the audience on the innovative and future-oriented initiatives from the Department. Dr S Selvakumar, in his address, shed light on the significance of World Youth Skills Day for the youth of Karnataka. A video encapsulating the major schemes and initiatives of the institutions of the Department was presented at the event.
Winners of India Skills 2021 were honoured, while the zonal, state and national competitions for the World Skills competition 2024 were flagged off. The mascot for World Skills ‘Skilli’ was also launched at the event. Winners of KSDC’s Skillathon competition also received prizes from the dignitaries. The event also hosted a display of the skills of youth in various trades from across the state.
Sanjeevini – KSRLPS exchanged MoU with KSDC for providing entrepreneurship development training to 25,000 women across Karnataka. KSDC signed MoU with Microsoft for digital skilling interventions targeted at underserved youth.
The Commissionerate of ITI exchanged MoU with Infosys for the utilization of their Springboard platform for digital skilling of students. GTTC exchanged MoU with Toyota Kirloskar for conducting on-the-job training for their trainees. Members from women self help groups under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), who were imparted training in driving, shared their experience on stage and interacted with the Hon’ble Chief Minister. Beneficiaries of a programme by NRLM implemented through the Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled were felicitated by the dignitaries.
World Youth Skills Day is celebrated on 15 July every year to highlight the strategic significance of skills in youth for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship. It is a global opportunity for all the stakeholders to recommit their resources for strengthening the skilling ecosystem worldwide.
