Toys play an important role in the overall development of children. They develop creativity, curiosity and motor skills in children and also help them learn easily and quickly. Toys have been used for storytelling, learning and cultural interface. The tradition of Toys in India is believed to be around 5000 years old. Fascinating toys like dolls, small toy carts, animal figurines, etc. have been found at the major sites of Indus valley civilization.

Over the years as the Indian civilization progressed, the diversity and plurality of our culture got reflected in the toy tradition as well.  Each region or State of India has its own rich toy traditions which have been very painstakingly and meticulously preserved by various communities like Walnut wood carving on toys of Jammu and Kashmir, handmade toys of Punjab, cloth dolls of Rajasthan, miniature utensils of Varanasi, terracotta toys of Gujarat, dancing dolls of Tamil Nadu.
