Clean and shared mobility could reduce energy demand by 57% and carbon emissions by 87% in India’s road transport sector by 2047. As the nation advances towards energy independence, electric vehicles (EVs) are emerging as a key tool to realise the vision of Viksit Bharat. Growing demand for EVs across metros as well as smaller cities is a testament to this reality.

Tier 2 and 3 Cities Leading EV Transition

In 2023, Tier 2 cities saw a 51% rise in EV sales, while Tier 3 cities saw a 30% increase. This change is being driven by evolving needs and increasing awareness of the Indian consumer. Eco-conscious citizens are increasingly seeking sustainable transport options, and smaller cities are witnessing an uptick in clean ride-hailing and logistics solutions.

Government initiatives like the PM E-Drive scheme have been crucial in making EVs accessible and affordable. As these factors continue to build a thriving EV ecosystem in India, smaller cities and mid-sized markets are opening several avenues for sustainability-driven innovation.

Scaling EV Adoption Further

Evidently, the EV landscape in Tier 2 and 3 regions is brimming with opportunity. However, expanding EVs in these regions faces challenges like infrastructure gaps, financing hurdles, and policy barriers. Join us in exploring solutions to accelerate EV adoption beyond metro cities at the NITI-Aayog led Shoonya campaign’s upcoming webinar.

About Shoonya

The “Shoonya — Zero-Pollution Mobility” campaign promotes the use of EVs for urban deliveries and ride-hailing. Shoonya, meaning “zero” in Sanskrit, implies the beginning and origination of possibilities. Inspired by this connotation, the Shoonya campaign is leading India’s transition to zero-emission vehicles through consumer awareness, industry engagement, and an impactful partnership with MyGov. In its first three years, the campaign has witnessed INR 766 crores in fuel savings, equivalent to planting 1.3 million trees.
