Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Concludes Golden Jubilee Celebrations with Special Session

This year marks a historic milestone in the democratic journey of Arunachal Pradesh as the State celebrates 50 glorious years of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (APLA). Since its inception in 1975, the Assembly has been the temple of democracy, shaping Arunachal Pradesh’s political, social, and economic trajectory.
On August 18, 2025, a special session was held at the Assembly Complex in Itanagar to mark the culmination of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. The event concluded a 45-day series of cultural programmes, exhibitions, and outreach initiatives that showcased Arunachal’s legislative journey and its unwavering democratic spirit.
A Legacy of Democracy and Progress
What began as a modest institution in 1975 with 33 members, 30 directly elected and 3 nominated by the Union Government has today blossomed into the very heart of governance in Arunachal Pradesh. Following statehood on February 20, 1987, the House strength was increased to 60 members, a structure that continues to this day.
Over the last five decades, the Assembly has stood as a beacon of people’s aspirations, giving voice to diverse communities, cultures, and regions. Through constructive debates, visionary legislations, and policy frameworks, APLA has played a pivotal role in steering Arunachal towards peace, stability, and inclusive growth.
Pillars of Strength
The Assembly has nurtured democratic values such as transparency, accountability, and representation. Generations of legislators have carried this responsibility forward, ensuring that the voices of the people from the remotest villages to the emerging towns find space in decision-making. Each era of leadership has left its imprint, strengthening the democratic ethos of the State.
Leadership and Reflections
The commemorative session was graced by Governor Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik (Retd), Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Speaker Tesam Pongte, and Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor, alongside past and present legislators Former Chief Ministers, Speakers, Deputy Speakers, and MLAs. The celebrations also paid tribute to stalwarts like Late P.K. Thungon, the State’s first Chief Minister, and Shri T.L. Rajkumar, a two-term Speaker, whose contributions were remembered with reverence.
In a deeply symbolic gesture, waters from the five principal rivers of Arunachal, Kameng, Subansiri, Siang, Lohit, and Tirap were united in the Assembly’s Unity Pond, embodying the State’s shared heritage and the spirit of oneness that defines its people across regions and traditions. To mark the historic milestone, the Hon’ble Governor unveiled a Commemorative Pillar, a lasting symbol of the Assembly’s legacy and Arunachal Pradesh’s democratic journey over the past 50 years.
Driving Development and Unity
In these 50 years, Arunachal Pradesh has made remarkable strides in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and connectivity. The Assembly has been instrumental in enabling progressive policies that empower women, promote tribal rights, and foster sustainable development. At the same time, it has served as a forum for dialogue and unity, preserving the State’s cultural identity while embracing modern aspirations.
