Awards Instituted by Cultural Department of Assam

Department of Culture, Assam institutes various awards to honour the doyens of Assam for their contribution and extraordinary work in the field of culture and various other allied sector of the society to acknowledge and recognise their talents in their respective fields such as classical and modern music and dance, folk and traditional music, dance and drama, cinema and puppetry and so on.  Various awards given by the department are at the interval of one year, two years or three years depending on the guidelines for the same which comprise in both National and State level award.

National level awards:

The National level awards are

Once in every two years: Ajan Peer Award, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award, K. K. Handique Award, Gopinath Bardoloi Award, Kalicharan Brahma Award

Once in every three years: Srimanta Sankaradeva Award, Madhabdeva Award, Siu-Ka-Pha Award, Bir Chilarai Award.

The Term of Award: The Awardee for Srimanta Sankaradeva Award will be given an amount of Rs. 3.00 Lakhs( Rupees Three Lakhs) only, a Citation and a Gold Medal.

In case of other National Awards Rs. 2.00 Lakhs( Rupees Two Lakhs) only along with a Citation will be given to the Awardees.

Eligibility:

  • Awards are open to all person of Indian Nationality regardless of race, caste, creed, religion and sex
  • An association, institution, or organisation, is also eligible for the awards
  • No person below the age of 50 will ordinary be considered for the award
  • A deceased person cannot be considered for the award. However if the death of a person occurs subsequent to the decision of the State Government, the award will be given posthumously.
  • A person who received the award once will not be eligible for the same or other honour a second time, unless the government decides otherwise.
  • Canvassing in any form will be treated as disqualification.
  • The award must not pertain to any single work or achievement but significant and lasting contribution on sustained basis over a period of time.
  • Procedure for nomination and selection:

The Cultural Affairs Department, Assam will invite nominations by a specific date from the following i. Sangeet Natak Akademi of India

  1. Sangeet Natak Akademi of India
  2. Lalit Kala Akademi of India
  3. Zonal Cultural Centre
  4. Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India
  5. Sahitya Akademi of India\
  6. Assam Sahitya Sabha
  7. Head/Dean, Faculty of Arts of Indian Universities
  8. Ministry of Information and Broadcasting
  9. Department of Cultural Affairs of different states

State level awards:

The State level awards are

Yearly: Shilpi Award, Bishnu Rabha Award, Natasurya Phani Sarma Award, Sonit Konwar Gajen Barua Award

Once in three years: Sahityachariya Atul Chandra Hazarika Award, Bhabendra Nath Saikia Award, Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya Award, Amal Prabha Das Award, Chandra Prabha Saikia Award, Ganesh Gogoi Award, Mamoni Raisom Goswami Award, Asom Ratna Award, Birangana Sati Sadhani Award, Baskandi Sheikh Ahmed Ali Award, Syed Abdul Malik Award.

The Term of Award: The Awardee for Asom Ratna Award will be given an amount of Rs. 3.00 Lakhs( Rupees Three Lakhs) only, a Citation, a memento and a shawl.

In case of other State Awards Rs. 1.00 Lakhs( Rupees One Lakh) only along with a Citation and a Shawl will be given to the Awardees.

  • Awards are open to all person of eminence in the specific field working in the State of Assam  regardless of race, caste, creed, religion and sex
  • An association, institution, or organisation, is not eligible for the awards
  • No person below the age of 50 will ordinary be considered for the award
  • A deceased person cannot be considered for the award. However, if the death of a person occurs subsequent to the decision of the State Government, the award will be given posthumously.
  • A person who has received any of the awards once will not be eligible for the same honour a second time.
  • Canvassing in any form will be treated as disqualification.
