Jan Dhan se Jan Suraksha- Securing the Unsecured
In the words of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ‘Reform is merely a stage; transformation of the nation is the destination’. With a vision to bring the entire country under a financial framework, the government is surging ahead on the path of reforms to transform India. Financial inclusion broadens the resource base of the financial system by developing a culture of savings among rural population. It plays a significant role in the process of economic development.
Following the Independence Day speech in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Jan Dhan Yojana, an initiative which is defined as the method chosen to tackle poverty. Demonstrating an empowering and enabling model, today Jan Dhan Yojana has changed the lives of 29.58 crore Indians.
The biggest asset of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been that he has seen India at the grass roots level as a commoner in his formative years. Owing to the Government’s understanding and vision, Jan Dhan has emerged as the biggest symbol of financial inclusion and a tool of poverty alleviation.
The innovation of Jan Dhan extends further beyond and guarantees social security for every citizen of India. With a two pronged approach to make this scheme viable, the government moved a step ahead from Jan Dhan to Jan Suraksha.
The insurance scheme under the umbrella of Jan Suraksha for the poor proved to be a master stroke. The current government believes that for the best talents to emerge from the weaker sections of the society in the service of the nation, it is important that nobody suffers from a sense of insecurity for their future.
More than 3.14 crore insured under PMJJBY and 10.11 crore insured under PMSBY are a testament to the transformational change made by these schemes. The countless voices across the nation have proved of a change that the current government aspired for.
Another step to provide social security to the unorganized sector in a manner that was highly effective was Atal Pension Yojana. Based on the PM’s belief which was developed in the course of his travel across the country – that unorganized workers like domestic helpers, drivers, vegetable vendors, have to face great difficulties after retirement due to lack of a steady income and savings. Therefore, the Prime Minister introduced the Atal Pension Yojana for different age brackets. To address the longevity risks among the workers in unorganized sector and to encourage the workers in unorganized sector, the yojana was designed with a goal to save for the retirement.
From financial inclusion to social security, the Government has assured its citizens of providing support at every step. India has made substantial advances in its progress with its inclusive agenda by driving groundbreaking initiatives. With its transformational policies and initiatives, the current government has come a long way in building a system of security that is essential for the common man.
