The first in our series of success stories features the successful implementation of sanitation projects under Swachh Bharat Mission in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Sikkim. In line with IDF-OI’s mandate of implementing Government of India’s flagship programme -Swachh Bharat Mission across states in India, projects successfully executed by state agencies include the construction of community toilets in Tirupati and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, a public toilet in Amritsar, Punjab, and a community sanitary complex in Gangtok, Sikkim.

Striving towards the goal of improving health through eradication of open defecation, these projects have provided access to good sanitation facilities to several beneficiaries. For instance, community toilet in Tirupati benefits nearly 1600 pilgrims and local residents. The community toilet in the Government hospital of Vijayawada by ensuring a user friendly hygienic facility, is catering to sanitation needs of local population including the differently abled. The public toilet in Rambagh Garden of Amritsar is another project in consonance with Swachh Bharat Mission, and benefits slum dwellers, floating population and street vendors who otherwise have no access to toilets. The Sanitary complex in Gangtok built over two floors has separate sanitary blocks for men and women, water closets, bathing cubicles with solar heating and hand-washing facilities. A sanitary napkin vending machine is also provided. This will cater to the public, tourists, and traders travelling to and from Nathu La.

As IDF-OI enters its next phase of implementation of projects pertaining to sanitation and education, we hope that the success of these projects, funded by UAE based NRI Mr. Yusuff Ali M.A., would inspire other Overseas Indians to give back to their country of their origin.
