Launched in 2015, Skill India Mission under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has benefitted more than 1 crore people annually, paving the way for India to become the Skill Capital of the world. Its three most significant interventions;Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme and Industrial Training Institutes has transformed the skilling ecosystem and helped millions secure a better livelihood.

The 21-year old single mother of two, Ranjana was married at a tender age of 15. After her husband was jailed in a murder case, she knew she had to source her finances. Learning about the free-of-cost office assistant course under PMKVY, Ranjana decided she wouldn’t let her daughters live a life of misery and uncertainty. She enrolled herself for the course and with her hard work and determination, she was able to secure a job as a Patient Care Assistant at a reputed diagnostic center.

Ranjana is among the 29 lakhs whose life has transformed through PMKVY short-term-training program. As the youth is aspiring to acquire a skill of their choice, industry is welcoming the trained manpower which helps them improve productivity across all levels. As many begin to realize the impact of Skill India Mission, some would often say Fark Dikh Raha Hai.

Mapping the demands of industry, Skill India is incentivizing corporates to hire and train apprentices, providing on-the-job-training to the youth across different sectors. The one of its kind, National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS)has benefited more than 5 lakh candidates since August 2016. It is our endeavor to benefit more than 10 lakh apprentices in FY 18-19.

Since its inception in 1950, Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) have empowered many to achieve their dream through skill development. One such candidate is Sachin Narale, who had to discontinue his studies due to financial instability but that didn’t stop him from achieving his dream. He used his mother’s saving to complete a diploma at an ITI and joined Mahindra & Mahindra as a Welder. With persistence and hard work, he improved his skills and went on to represent India at WorldSkills Competition 2015 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Today Sachin is working as a master training with Mahindra & Mahindra, Pune where he inspires others to achieve their dreams through skills.

Every day, every hour, more and more individuals are joining Skill India to secure a life of dignity and prosperity. From the AC technician to the taxi driver, Skill India is providing a ladder of opportunities to the aspiring youth across all sectors, which could help them earn a better livelihood and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the country.
