Essay Competition “My Dream Guwahati”

Municipal Corporation of Guwahati organized an Essay Competition on 31/10/2015 on the theme “My Dream Guwahati” at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati. Commissioner, Guwahati Municipal Corporation and other Officials from Guwahati Municipal Corporation and Consultant WAPCOS-OASIS, New Delhi were also present. The Essay competition was held in two group’s viz. Class 8th – 10th (Group A) and 11th Class – Degree level(Group B). Students of various educational institutions of the city of both English and Assamese medium participated in the competition. The criteria for evaluation of the Essays were (i) Identification of Problems/Challenges of the City and its Understanding, (ii) Proposed Solutions (iii) Practical or Implementable Solutions (iv) Innovative Ideas suggested. The top three essays in the respective groups are to be awarded with Cash Prizes and Certificates.

During this competition, the Parents and the Students were urged to register themselves in MyGov.in and participate actively in the online discussion. Online registration on Mygov.in was also carried out on the spot amongst willing parents and students. The response from the parents was very encouraging and their valuable suggestion included improvement in the sectors like storm water drains, flood management/flash floods, roads conditions and traffic congestion, Sewerage system, Solid Waste Management, Health, Education, Open Parks, River Front Development etc. were the key areas in which the participants desired intervention.

The expert committee consisting of retired senior citizens and young citizens consisting of Principals, Professors and Lecturers from reputed educational institutions evaluated the essays based on the evaluation criteria. Majority of the students have indicated that Storm Water Drainage, Improvement of Roads, Traffic Congestion, Sewerage, Solid Waste Management/Disposal, Water Supply and Sanitation, Health, Education are some of the areas in which the Guwahati City needs further development. The students had given their valuable suggestions in the above areas like promoting usage of renewable solar energy, traffic management, solid waste management and sanitation, e-governance etc. which can be considered as an inputs in the preparation of Guwahati smart city proposal. The Expert committee has selected the following top three essays ranking them 1st & 2nd and 3rd Position. They are:
