Groundwater levels increase in Khammam

04 Nov 2019

As many as 1393 soak pits were constructed and handed over to individuals and the community in Thirumalaypalam Block of Khammam district in Telangana since the start of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA) on 1st July, 2019. As a result, groundwater levels in dug wells and bore wells have shown a remarkable increase.

According to Mr. Ravi Nath Singh, (Deputy Director, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation); who is serving as the Technical Officer during the JSA campaign; owing to the works undertaken and recent rainfall, ground water levels in dug wells have increased by 1.5 to 2.5m and that in borewells have increased by about 5m.

The Technical Officer had made his second visit to the district between 22nd and 24th August, 2019, when he visited the villages of Pindiprolu, Medidapally and Thippareddygudem out of the 40 Gram Panchayats in Thirumalaypalem Block.

He reported that other interventions are currently underway in Pindiprolu village. Among them are more soak pits, borewell recharge structures, and plantations to increase green cover.

On the other hand, in Medidapally staggered trenches are being made to tap rainwater and improve water conservation; and in Rajaram village, work to renovate water tank has been started.

During the visit, the TO participated in a day-long Sarpanch programme. It provided an opportunity for him to create awareness about water conservation and highlight the objectives of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan.

Plans are in the pipeline to fill maximum water tanks by Sriram Sagar Project that will increase groundwater levels considerably.
