Arunachal Pradesh stands at the crossroads of history and heritage, a land where the echoes of World War II still linger through the hills of Changlang District. The World War II Memorial Museum at Jairampur, located near the historic Stilwell Road and Pangsau Pass, is one such poignant reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the deep global connections forged during a time of war.

Under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister, the State Government has embarked on an ambitious initiative to upgrade and transform the museum into a premier heritage and tourism destination, preserving not only the wartime legacy but also honouring the invaluable contributions of the indigenous communities of Arunachal Pradesh.

A Heritage Reimagined

Chairing a series of key meetings in recent months, Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the importance of revitalizing the World War II Memorial Museum as a living tribute to the unsung heroes who served and supported Allied forces during the Burma Campaign.

The Singpho, Khamti, Adi, Nocte, Mishmi, and Naga communities played remarkable roles as soldiers, porters, and guides, contributing to one of the most challenging wartime operations along the treacherous terrains of the Stilwell Road. Recognizing their courage and sacrifice, the upgraded museum will feature:

  • Rare wartime artefacts and memorabilia,
  • An exclusive tribal gallery celebrating the contributions of local communities, and
  • Immersive exhibits that bring to life the untold stories of resilience and camaraderie from the era.

The initiative aligns with the Government’s vision to make Jairampur a hub of heritage-based tourism — seamlessly blending historical education with cultural pride and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Strengthening Heritage Tourism

In meeting held on September 23, 2025, it was underscored that the restoration of colonial-era structures and the creation of a heritage tourism circuit along the historic Stilwell Road would attract global visitors from historians and researchers to remembrance travellers and adventure tourists.

This heritage initiative is envisioned not only as a tribute to history but also as a driver of local economic empowerment. It will generate livelihoods in guiding, hospitality, handicrafts, transport, and allied services for communities residing along the route.

Commemorating 80 Years of World War II

Marking a milestone in this initiative, the State Government will celebrate the 80th Year of World War II during the Pangsau Pass Winter Festival, with special events curated to rekindle interest in the region’s wartime legacy. Highlights include:

  • A Willy Jeep Rally from the Hump Museum in Pasighat to Pangsau Pass,
  • A Super Car Rally, and
  • Commemorative cultural events honouring the shared history between Arunachal Pradesh and the Allied nations.

These celebrations will showcase Arunachal’s enduring links with the global narrative of World War II, transforming the region into a centre for heritage tourism, historical research, and cultural remembrance.

Leadership and Collaboration

To ensure careful planning and effective implementation, a committee has been constituted. The committee includes senior legislators, administrators, and officers from the Research Department.

The project has garnered active participation reflecting a shared commitment to preserving Arunachal’s historical heritage.

A Vision Rooted in Legacy

Through the upgradation of the Jairampur Museum and the commemorative initiatives planned around it, Arunachal Pradesh is not only conserving the memory of the past but also building a bridge between history and progress.

The upgraded museum will safeguard the memories of those who served and sacrificed, while inspiring generations to value resilience, unity, and shared legacy. More than a monument, the World War II Memorial Museum at Jairampur stands as a living testament to collective courage and the enduring spirit of the land and its people.
