Arunachal Pradesh Unveils Ambitious Tourism Policy to Redefine Visitor Experience

Arunachal Pradesh has embarked on an ambitious journey to transform its tourism sector, marked by the official launch of a new and comprehensive Tourism Policy. Unveiled on April 2 in New Delhi, the policy aims to position the state as a top destination for experiential tourism. With the launch of a new logo and brand identity – “Arunachal: Beyond Myths and Mountains”, the state is opening a new chapter in its tourism narrative.
The policy aims not only to enhance visitor experience but also to generate employment, boost entrepreneurship, and drive inclusive growth across the state.
A Bold Push for Experiential and Niche Tourism
The state’s strategy places a strong emphasis on immersive and authentic travel experiences. The tourism policy highlights a range of focus areas, including farm tourism, wine tourism, wellness and spiritual tourism, adventure and ecotourism, tribal tourism, film tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) tourism, and border tourism.
Speaking at the press conference in New Delhi, Director of the Department of Tourism, GoAP, highlighted the unique opportunities the state offers particularly in adventure and border tourism, given Arunachal’s strategic location bordering Tibet, Bhutan, Myanmar, Assam, and Nagaland.
Enhancing Infrastructure and Accessibility
One of the policy’s key priorities is improving connectivity and infrastructure. Planned upgrades include better road and air access, improved transport and signage, and enhanced wayside amenities. These developments are aimed at making travel across Arunachal more convenient, safe, and enjoyable for visitors.
Additionally, the state aims to expand its accommodation capacity by 50%, a move that will help meet the growing demand. At present, Arunachal Pradesh hosts 793 registered homestays and 237 hotels. Collaborations with major travel aggregators such as Airbnb and MakeMyTrip are also underway to promote homestays and farm stays to a wider audience.
Skilling the Workforce for Inclusive Growth
Recognizing the need for a skilled and inclusive workforce, the government is also focusing on capacity building and vocational training. Skill gap assessments will guide tailored training programs for local guides, small businesses, and hospitality service providers. Strategic partnerships with reputed institutions like IITTM (Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management) and IHM (Institute of Hotel Management) will help shape the future workforce.
Boosting Investments and Ease of Doing Business
The new policy promises a more business-friendly environment to attract domestic and international investments. With a focus on simplifying regulations and encouraging entrepreneurship, the government aims to make Arunachal a sought-after destination for tourism-related ventures.
Impressive Growth and Future Goals
Arunachal Pradesh is already witnessing a sharp rise in tourism. In 2023, foreign tourist arrivals rose by 300%, reaching 4,496 visitors, while domestic tourism surged by 368.91% to cross 1.04 million footfalls. The new policy sets ambitious targets — aiming to double domestic tourist numbers and increase international arrivals tenfold.
Learning from Global Best Practices
In its mission to build a sustainable and vibrant tourism ecosystem, Arunachal Pradesh is also looking outward, studying and adopting international best practices in ecotourism. This global outlook will ensure that development is not just rapid, but also responsible and inclusive.
Conclusion
With this bold and visionary tourism policy, Arunachal Pradesh is set to redefine its place on the tourism map of India and the world. By combining natural beauty with modern infrastructure and immersive experiences, the state is paving the way for a tourism-led growth story that is inclusive, sustainable, and transformative.
Arunachal: Beyond Myths and Mountains is not just a slogan, it is a promise of discovery, culture, and adventure waiting to unfold. Come, be a part of it. Arunachal awaits.
