On 28th February every year, India celebrates the National Science Day to mark the glorious achievement of one of India’s best-known scientists, Nobel Laureate physicist Sir C V Raman. On this day in 1928, Sir C V Raman discovered the spectroscopy phenomenon that was named after him as the ‘Raman Effect’. He has inspired the nation to build its scientific and technological prowess for the welfare of the citizens.
National Science Day is celebrated every year based on different themes. This year’s theme is ‘Science and Technology for Specially-Abled Persons’. The present century’s advances in science and technology have transformed the lives of people all over the world. The specially-abled persons also have been the beneficiaries of these scientific innovations; especially with the introduction of gadgets that have made their lives easier and more comfortable. The primary emphasis has been on recognising the specially-abled children and their needs, and empowering them with technologies that suit their demands. By adopting this theme, the focus is on making the specially-abled more aware of the scientific advances and exploring the way in which they can also contribute to the field of science and technology.
Every year, several events are organised by various government and non-governmental organisations, universities and research institutes throughout the country to mark the National Science Day. Apart from lauding the significant achievements made by Indian scientists, these programmes also create awareness among those citizens who are yet to avail the benefits of the existing scientific and technological innovations. Moreover, activities like exhibitions, science museum and laboratory visits, science quizzes and lectures by eminent scientists in schools and colleges play an important role in attracting bright young minds into taking science subjects as a career choice and contribute to India’s development.
India has evolved into one of the top countries in the field of scientific and technological innovations. Science and technology have played an undeniable role in India’s growth story and its positive influence is reflected in all the prominent sectors like agriculture, industry, renewable energy, health, environment and climate change, and infrastructure development. The most glowing example of India’s success in science is its prestigious space programme that has been globally appreciated for its cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
However, there is much more that India can aim and strive to achieve. India as a country has huge potential that needs to be tapped for sustainable development and empowerment of the society as a whole. Investing in science and technological innovation has been a priority area that will bring long-term benefits. State of the art infrastructure is the key to scientific and technical innovations. International collaborations and developing a space for sharing innovations and ideas would give more people the opportunity to be a part of India’s science and technology arena. Furthermore, science and technological innovations have also been instrumental in bringing economic growth and inclusive development.
The Union government has been keen to elevate India’s scientific and technological innovation to new levels. Several large-scale programmes has been launched in this regard. Initiatives like Startup India Programme, Atal Innovation Mission and NIDHI (National Initiative for Development and Harnessing Innovations) are all aimed at boosting India’s scientific and technological prowess.
India has a glorious history of scientific and technological innovations that has been taken forward by India’s scientists, and is playing a crucial role in transforming the country into a technological superpower.
