India’s electric mobility transition is at a pivotal juncture. As the nation pushes forward with decarbonising its transport sector, electric vehicles (EVs) are steadily becoming instrumental in making Atmanirbhar Bharat a reality. However, one factor remains central to sustaining and accelerating this momentum: charging infrastructure.

A Rapidly Expanding Market

Projections indicate that India will need approximately 39 lakh public charging stations by 2030 to support this expansion. This ambitious target underscores the massive opportunity to develop comprehensive and accessible charging networks to facilitate widespread EV adoption across the country.

Government schemes such as Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME II), Production-Linked Incentives (PLI), various state-level policies and awareness initiatives like the NITI Aayog’s Shoonya campaign have been instrumental in promoting the establishment of charging networks.

The Road Ahead

Continued success and achieving the projected infrastructure requirements by 2030 will necessitate sustained investment, policy support, and innovative solutions to overcome challenges related to grid capacity, land acquisition, and standardisation. In this context, Shoonya’s upcoming webinar, ‘Charging the EV Revolution: Powering Adoption Through Widespread Infrastructure,’ will provide a timely platform to explore the evolving landscape of EV charging in India.

About Shoonya

The “Shoonya — Zero-Pollution Mobility” campaign promotes the use of EVs for urban deliveries and ride-hailing. Shoonya, meaning “zero” in Sanskrit, implies the beginning and origination of possibilities. Inspired by this connotation, the Shoonya campaign is leading India’s transition to zero-emission vehicles through consumer awareness, industry engagement, and an impactful partnership with MyGov. In its first three years, the campaign has witnessed INR 766 crores in fuel savings, equivalent to planting 1.3 million trees.
