ಭಾರತ ಅಂಚೆಯ ವಿಶೇಷ ಲಕೋಟೆ: ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ ಬ್ರಿಟ್ಟೊಗೆ ಗೌರವ ಸಮರ್ಪಣೆ
In a mark of tribute, Department of Chief Post Master General Karnataka Circle, Bengaluru issued a Special Cover on NATIONAL SPORTS DAY – 2022 ON 29th August. It is a tribute to Hockey Queen late Elvera Britto a former Indian women’s Hockey Team Captain who passed away on 26th April 2022.
ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪೋಸ್ಟ್‌ ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್‌ ಜನರಲ್‌ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ವೃತ್ತ ಇಲಾಖೆಯು ಆಗಸ್ಟ್ 29 ರಂದು ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ದಿನದ ಅಂಗವಾಗಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಅಂಚೆ ಲಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಮೂಲಕ 26ನೇ ಏಪ್ರಿಲ್ 2022 ರಂದು ನಿಧನರಾದ ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ ಬ್ರಿಟ್ಟೋ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಗೌರವ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.
In the late 1950s, girls on rickety bicycles with hockey sticks slung on their backs making beeline to Sulivan Police Grounds was a sight to behold. The Britto sisters – Priscilla, Elvera, Rita and Mae are among the most respected names in the history of Karnataka hockey.
ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ, ಕುಕ್ ಟೌನ್‌ನ ಲಾಯ್ಡ್ ರಸ್ತೆಯ ಗಲ್ಲಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ ತಮ್ಮ ಶಾಲಾ ದಿನಗಳಿಂದಲೂ ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು, ತಮ್ಮ 13 ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಕಿ ಆಡಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಉತ್ತಮ ಆಟಗಾರ್ತಿಯೆಂದು ಸಾಬೀತುಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಬ್ರಿಟ್ಟೊ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರಾದ ಪ್ರಿಸ್ಸಿಲ್ಲಾ, ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ, ರೀಟಾ ಮತ್ತು ಮೇ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಹಾಕಿ ಇತಿಹಾಸದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಯ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು. 1950 ರ ದಶಕದಲ್ಲಿ, ಬ್ರಿಟ್ಟೊ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರು ಹಾಕಿ ಸ್ಟಿಕ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಬೆನ್ನಿಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಬೈಸಿಕಲ್‌ ತುಳಿಯುತ್ತಾ ಸುಲಿವಾನ್ ಪೋಲೀಸ್ ಗ್ರೌಂಡ್ಸ್‌ ಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ದೃಶ್ಯವು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಇತಿಹಾಸದ ಸ್ಮೃತಿಪಟಲಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡಿದೆ.
Elvera was born and raised in Bangalore, growing up in the by lanes of Lloyd Road in Cooke Town. Elvera was very active in sports during her school days and turned to hockey at the age of 13 who proved to be outstanding at it. Elvera with her abundant talent and admirable finesse broke into big league along with her sisters when they represented erstwhile Mysore at a national-level school tournament in 1960, which the state won on debut.
ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ ಅವರು ತಮ್ಮ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರೊಂದಿಗೆ 1960 ರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಶಾಲಾ ಪಂದ್ಯಾವಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಳೆಯ ಮೈಸೂರನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸಿ, ವಿಜೇತರಾದಾಗ ಅವರ ಅಸಾಧಾರಣ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಯ ಪರಿಚಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆಟಗಾರರ ಉತ್ಸಾಹವನ್ನು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸಿ ಮೈಸೂರು ರಾಜ್ಯ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಹಾಕಿ ಸಂಘವು ಮೊದಲ ಬಾರಿಗೆ ಹಿರಿಯ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಹಾಕಿ ಚಾಂಪಿಯನ್‌ಶಿಪ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಗವಹಿಸಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿತು. ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ, ತಂಡದ ನಾಯಕಿಯಾಗಿ ಆಯ್ಕೆಯಾದರು. ಇವರ
There was no looking back for Elvera, the Britto sisters and the state hockey team since. Seeing the enthusiasm of players, Mysore State Women’s Hockey Association decided to participate in the Senior national Women’s Hockey Championship for the first time. Elvera was chosen to lead the team as captain which won the national crown for a record eight times on the trot and made the sport as popular as cricket among the fans. Her winning record as captain is a whopping 95% and went on to captain the Indian team at International level. She quit playing in 1967 ending her career quite prematurely. In 1966 she was bestowed with Arjuna Award by the then President Shri Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
ನಾಯಕತ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಸತತ ಎಂಟು ಬಾರಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಕಿರೀಟವನ್ನು ಗೆದ್ದು ದಾಖಲೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿ ಹಾಕಿ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯನ್ನು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯಗೊಳಿಸಿತು. ನಂತರದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತೀಯ ತಂಡದ ನಾಯಕತ್ವವನ್ನೂ ವಹಿಸಿದರು. 1966 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ವೆರ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಭಾರತದ ಮಾಜಿ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿಗಳಾದ ಸರ್ವೆಪಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಧಾಕೃಷ್ಣ ಅವರಿಂದ ಅರ್ಜುನ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಗೌರವಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. 1967 ರಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಕ್ರೀಡಾಪಟು ಜೀವನಕ್ಕೆ ದಿಢೀರ್ ವಿದಾಯ ಹೇಳಿದರು.
Elvera said at the time of her retirement, “I would have loved to play on, I still had a lot of hockey left in me. But when you are given a message that you are not needed anymore you know it is time to walk away with your head held high.” However Elvera’s passion for the game continued unabated and she returned to the sport as an administrator. She soon took over as the President of Karnataka State Hockey Association and served for eighth years.
ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ ತನ್ನ ನಿವೃತ್ತಿಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೀಗೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು, “ನನಗೆ ಆಟವಾಡಲು ಇಷ್ಟವಿದೆ, ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಆಟ ಬಾಕಿ ಇದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಅಗತ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬ ಸಂದೇಶ ಬಂದಮೇಲೆ, ಗೌರವದಿಂದ ತಲೆ ಎತ್ತಿ ಹೊರ ನಡೆಯುವ ಸಮಯ ಬಂದಿದೆ ಎಂದರ್ಥ”. ವಿದಾಯದ ನಂತರವೂ ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ ಅವರ ಕ್ರೀಡೆ ಜೊತೆಗಿನ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಮುಂದುವರೆಯಿತು. ಅವರು ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ನಿರ್ವಾಹಕರಾಗಿ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಗೆ ಮರಳಿ ಬಂದು ಮುಂದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹಾಕಿ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಎಂಟು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದರು.
She continued to serve the game to revive hockey culture, turning things around for women’s hockey in the state, making interschool competition her prime focus. She chose to be teacher and inspired generations of young girls to take up sports. Many players from the nineties fondly remember ‘the smiling Ms. Britto arriving every day on her moped’. Later she became a national selector, government observer and manager for the Indian team.
ಹಾಕಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಪಾತ್ರ ದೊಡ್ಡದಿದೆ. ಅಂತರ್ ಶಾಲಾ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಂದ್ರೀಕರಿಸಿ, ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಹಾಕಿ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯ ಏಳಿಗೆಗಾಗಿ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದರು. ತೊಂಬತ್ತರ ದಶಕದ ಆಟಗಾರರು ‘ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ ಬ್ರಿಟ್ಟೊ ನಗುಮುಖದೊಂದಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಮೊಪೆಡ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಬರುತ್ತಿದ್ದನ್ನು’ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಎಲ್ವೆರಾರವರು ನಂತರ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಆಯ್ಕೆಗಾರರಾಗಿ, ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಪರಿವೀಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾರತೀಯ ತಂಡದ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಾಪಕಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೀಗೆ ವಿವಿಧ ಹುದ್ದೆಗಳನ್ನು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಿದರು.
Elvera was a dynamic personality with other fascinating interests and hobbies known for her oil paintings from sceneries to portraits. She was also known for her Japanese/Ibekana Flower-arrangements. She was an expert at Batik painting and even had an exhibition of her prints. She had a flair for baking, cooking most appetising dishes, remembered by her family and friends.
ಎಲ್ವಿರಾ ಅವರು ಬಹುಮುಖ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಯಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಇತರ ಆಕರ್ಷಕ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಹವ್ಯಾಸಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ತೈಲ ಚಿತ್ರಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ರಚಿಸುತಿದ್ದರು ಹಾಗೂ ಜಪಾನೀಸ್/ಇಬೆಕಾನಾ ಹೂವುಗಳನ್ನು ಜೋಡಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಪುಣರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ಬಾಟಿಕ್ ಚಿತ್ರಕಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪರಿಣಿತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದು, ಅವುಗಳ ಮುದ್ರಣದ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶನವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಅವರ ಬೇಕಿಂಗ್ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಹಾಗೂ ಅಡುಗೆಯ ಕೈರುಚಿಯನ್ನು ಕುಟುಂಬದವರು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಮರೆತಿಲ್ಲ. ಎಲ್ವಿರಾ ತಮ್ಮ ಇತರ ಸೋದರಿಯರಂತೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಲವು ತಲೆಮಾರಿನ ಹೆಣ್ಣುಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
Mae Britto, at the event, looking back agreed though the going was tough- be it travel conditions, inadequate arrangements as they travelled the length and breadth of the country, to lack of encouragement & support, what motivated them was their joy to play for the glory of the state and for the glory of India. Their motto was ‘Do or Die’ and that made them come out victorious every time. In today’s times of single women chasing their dreams, making it big in the world, Elvera and the Britto sisters are huge inspiration who, by their words remained single by choice, living a wonderful life inspiring generation of girls to go chase their dreams and live it on their own terms.
ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ, ಮೇ ಬ್ರಿಟ್ಟೊರವರು ಮತನಾಡಿ, ಅವರ ಕಷ್ಟದ ದಿನಗಳನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಪ್ರಯಾಣದ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಗಳು, ದೇಶದ ಉದ್ದಗಲವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸುವಾಗ ಇದ್ದ ಅಸಮರ್ಪಕ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಗಳು, ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹ ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಂಬಲದ ಕೊರತೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲದರ ನಡುವೆಯು ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಹಾಗೂ ಭಾರತದ ಕೀರ್ತಿಗಾಗಿ ಆಡಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಕಿಚ್ಚು ಅವರನ್ನು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸಿತ್ತು. ‘ಮಾಡು ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಮಡಿ’ ಎಂಬ ಧ್ಯೇಯವಾಕ್ಯವು ಪ್ರತಿ ಬಾರಿಯೂ ವಿಜಯಶಾಲಿಯಾಗುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡಿತ್ತು. ಒಬ್ಬೊಂಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಹಿಳೆಯು ತಮ್ಮ ಕನಸುಗಳನ್ನು ಬೆನ್ನಟ್ಟಬಹುದು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಬ್ರಿಟ್ಟೊ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರು ಸಾಬೀತು ಪಡಿಸಿ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
The Chief Guest Padma Shree M. P.Ganesh former Indian Hockey Captain and Coach, Arjuna Awardee had high praise for the hockey champion. He said “ Elvera and her sisters are great ambassador of Indian Sports. It is very rare for you to find three girls from the same family to represent the state and country and churn out championship for as long as they did. Parents must encourage their children to pursue their interest in sports instead of forcing them to score marks. Education and sports must go hand ind hand. Sports helps individuals to develop a sound body and mind helping in creating vaulable contributions to society. I am honoured to have served my country through sports and thank sports for everything that I am today.”
ಭಾರತ ತಂಡದ ಮಾಜಿ ನಾಯಕ, ಪದ್ಮಶ್ರಿ ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ ಎಂ.ಪಿ ಗಣೇಶ್‌ ಅವರು ಮಾತನಾಡಿ ‘ಎಲ್ವೆರಾ ಬಹಳ ಸಕ್ರಿಯವಾಗಿ ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು. ಒಂದೇ ಕುಟುಂಬದಿಂದ 3 ಸಹೋದರಿಯರು ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯೊಂದರಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರವನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೇ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸಿ ಸತತವಾದ ಯಶಸ್ಸು ಸಾಧಿವುದು ಬಹಳ ಅಪರೂಪದ ವಿಷಯ. ಬ್ರಿಟ್ಟೊ ಸಹೋದರಿಯರು ಭಾರತ ತಂಡವನ್ನು 7 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಪ್ರತಿನಿಧಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ನಾನು ನನ್ನ 27 ನೇ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾರತ ತಂಡದ ನಾಯಕನಾಗಿದ್ದು, ನಂತರದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ 15 ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ವಿಭಾಗಗಳನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿರುವುದು ನನಗೆ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯಿದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳಲ್ಲೂ ಕ್ರೀಡೆಯನ್ನು ಪ್ರೋತ್ಸಾಹಿಸಬೇಕು. ಪೋಷಕರು ತಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡು ಅವರನ್ನು ಮುನ್ನಡೆಯಲು ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸಬೇಕು. ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಕ್ರೀಡೆ ಎರಡು ಜೊತೆಜೊತೆಯಾಗಿ ಸಾಗಬೇಕುʼ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು.
It is interesting to note that the special cover was released on the National Sports Day which is celebrated on the birth anniversary of another hockey legend of India – major Dhyan Chand.
ಭಾರತದ ಮತ್ತೊಬ್ಬ ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಹಾಕಿ ಆಟಗಾರ ಮೇಜರ್ ಧ್ಯಾನ್ ಚಂದ್ ಅವರ ಜನ್ಮದಿನದಂದು ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುವ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಕ್ರೀಡಾ ದಿನದಂದೇ ವಿಶೇಷ ಅಂಚೆ ಲಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದು ಗಮನಾರ್ಹ.
