The Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India has initiated a discussion forum on “Improving community participation in Watershed Management” for which there has been an overwhelming response from the citizens of the country. We have received many useful suggestions and views on the subject.

The enthusiastic participation in the discussion has shown that people are concerned about the issue of water availability in the country. Very interesting views and ideas have been thrown in the discussion by some of which are being mentioned here.

Watershed management today is synonymous with poverty alleviation. A number of people have suggested the need for involving the community in watershed management. They have also said that all sections of the society should be involved in this work. There are also suggestions to provide incentives to people to implement water harvesting works on the principles of watershed management. There is almost unanimous view on implementing drip irrigation for efficient use of water in agriculture and horticulture. Some have reflected that aging water infrastructure, increasing demand, continued land use change, and increasingly extreme weather events are driving the costs of water management higher. Investing in integrated water management strategies that combine engineered solutions with “natural infrastructure” can reduce costs, enhance services, and provide a suite of co-benefits for communities and the environment.

More emphasis has to be given to in-situ soil moisture conservation practices and irrespective of the ownership of the land, contour bunds, gully plugging, stabilization of sloping land etc should be given more importance than mere check dam construction. There are also suggestions about recharging aquifers, storage of rain water in farm lands, building low cost structures for water harvesting and removing encroachments from kunds, talavs and other traditional water harvesting structures. There are also suggestions that good work done in watershed management must be shared.

A number of posts are also about other related issues of water management though not a part of watershed management, like the issue of rain water harvesting in the urban areas, collection and use of discharge water from cities and river linking in the country,

We have taken note of the posts and are working on bringing out a document on the key suggestions that have been made by the citizens. With time, these suggestions will definitely influence the program being implemented by the Department in a positive way.

The discussion forum has been active since September 2014 and has received more than two thousand posts and has served a very useful purpose. Therefore we will be closing this Discussion group shortly. We will subsequently come out with a Discussion group on another relevant aspect of water management in the country.

We hope that you shall keep up the participation and continue enriching us with your views and suggestions. We would also expect the participants to keep focused on the topic of the discussion so that the ideas, experiences and knowledge are shared in a useful manner.

    Contd.. K2K Project
    Proposal: Digging an artificial river starting from Kanyakumari ending upto Kashmir :-
    Idea: Any state which gets flash floods or heavy rains, will be diverted (flushed into) to this river.
    Timeline: 1 Year
    Developing Cost: Financed to 5 top Companies (with average distance of 600 kms to each). These companies will further sublet diversions (left-right states) to 6 major private companies each avg dist 100 – 150 kms in east/west directions).

    Contd.. K2K Project:
    What all these Companies will build (undertake):-
    ~ Mechanical lifting of flood water into their Dams,
    ~ generate hydro electricity
    ~ clense water upto drinking levels (manual carbon based RO system) @ every 600 kms.
    ~ Same task will undertaken be done by 6 major pvt co with each Top Company (for diversion to their States).
    ~ Loan from World Bank possible under reducing temperature rise & road/fuel loads directly reducing pollution levels in large extents.

    4. Fulfilling in most economical way various water needs – drinking, farming, fishing, transportation, travel, etc.

    With help of our IITs, a most viable model with state of art technology by making use of principles science/natural physics, it could be an example to the World showcasing how India has overcomes its age-old annual loss of lives .. contd.

    Contd.. K2K Project – every Indian a Millionaire ~ K2K (Kanyakumari to Kashmir) ~ like a Fishbone design

    Commercial approach:
    ~ Smart cities needs millions of gallons of water every day besides their cleaning requirements that could be sold @ Rs1 pr 100 gallons.
    ~ Fish farming is most demanding business in the world; India could be a leading supplier to this product.
    ~ Each 600 kms river to develop Cruise travel business @ economical costs can boost to cheap transportation,travel needs.

    I have suggestions about water logging issue, in 2004 P.M Vajapai wanted to connect all rivers to each other, which is need to think and how we can do it, to balance water in country, it will help farmers, and also reduce water waste as well.

    In last few years rain is very uncertain in whole India. To counter balance this a large network of canals should be interconnected like roads are connected. These canals should be dug deep up to water table of that region so that people can get water even in summer also. This will help agriculture which depends highly on monsoon. Then this dependency can be mitigated. This will also help to improve water table and arsenic contamination problem.

    In India, every village is having 1 to 5 pond’s. Inter connect them using big cement pipe’s with valves to control water flow, which should be below 5 to 10 meters from earth surface (So that no need to take any land from people). Once this is done, connect village pond’s to another village pond’s. Then taluk to taluk and district to district and then state to state. Down the line entire India’s pond’s interconnected like a web. This will provide employment and water to everyone.

    Request Mr.prime Minister to give serious thought on ATTACHING ALL RIVERS (MAJOR,MINOR) IN A PHASED MANNER TOGETHER SO THAT THE ISSUES OF DROUGHT CAN BE TACKLED.

    IF ALL RIVERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY CAN BE MERGED ,IT WILL TACKLE MAJOR ISSUES OF WATER MAINLY FOR FARMERS LEADING TO SOLUTION TO MANY SUCH ISSUES OF YOUTH MOVING OUT OF RURAL AREA , LOG VILLAGE SE SHEHAR KI ORE NAHI JAYENGEY.
    FARMING WOULD BE LUCRATIVE AS A PROFESSION.
    INDIA NOW NEEDS A WATER REVOLUTION.A SOLAR REVOLUTION

    In 2013 few areas of uttarakhand were flooded due to heavy rain.rivers were flowing over dangerous marks.i am here in Maharashtra I found that most of areas are affected of drought. farmers are committing suicide due to unavailability of water/ rain. why don’t we harvest water from flooded area and transport(via train) to the drought area. When we can transport petrol,diesel from Arab countries then why not water from the nearest .hopeThis can solve the water problem of farmers to some extent.
