“India wants to lead and bring all countries together to foster pro-planet action. This is the idea behind our championing various Green Global Initiatives” – PM Modi

From local actions to global leadership: India’s environment journey is powered by purpose, people, and PM Modi’s transformative missions.

On World Environment Day 2025, India isn’t just observing the day — we’re celebrating a decade-plus of purpose-driven environmental action. Under the visionary and decisive leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India has moved from being a passive participant in climate talks to becoming a global trailblazer in sustainable development and green energy.

Let’s trace this journey:

From “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” to Mission LiFE — People-Led Green Movements

It began with a powerful call by PM Modi: Plant a tree in your mother’s name. Simple, yet profound — “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” has now become more than a campaign. It is a cultural movement. People from all walks of life are embracing it, turning personal tribute into planetary good.

Complementing this is Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), launched by PM Modi to encourage mindful consumption, sustainability in daily life, and circular economy practices. It redefined climate action as not just the responsibility of governments, but of every individual.

From Banning Single-Use Plastics to CO₂ Emission Cuts — Policy With Purpose

India took decisive steps to ban single-use plastics in a world grappling with plastic pollution. What seemed radical a few years ago is now the norm across cities and even rural communities. It wasn’t just a policy — it was a mindset shift.

India’s efforts in cutting CO₂ emissions and expanding EV infrastructure have been systematic. These efforts are backed by innovative schemes, global partnerships, and a firm belief that economic growth and ecological responsibility can go hand-in-hand.

Energy Transformation

India has become a global force in the renewable energy space. With a record annual capacity addition of 29.52 GW, the total installed renewable energy (RE) capacity in India has reached 220.10 GW as of 31st March 2025, up from 198.75 GW in the previous fiscal. This performance reflects India’s steady advancement towards the target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030, as part of its commitments under the ‘Panchamrit’ goals set by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

From the world’s largest solar parks to rooftop solutions for the common citizen, we’re building a clean energy architecture that is both inclusive and ambitious.

India is now the 4th largest refiner, 3rd largest energy consumer, and a leader in green hydrogen and biofuels — a transition that was only possible due to the groundwork laid over the last 11 years.

The Viksit Bharat Vision: Green, Strong, Self-Reliant

India’s climate model is now a global case study — one that fuses growth with green, speed with sustainability, and citizen action with national vision.

As the world deals with cascading climate and geopolitical challenges, India stands firm, confident, committed, and clear-eyed in its pursuit of a greener tomorrow.
