Atal Tunnel has given a big boost to the tourism development as it has opened the virgin and beautiful valley to the world tourists. This would not only provide ample employment and self-employment opportunities to the locals but would transform the economy of the people of this district. Atal Tunnel and Tourism were gradually becoming synonymous as over 5000 tourist vehicles were daily crossing this Tunnel towards Lahaul valley.
Snow festival has helped the reviving the traditions almost at the verge of extinction, besides showcasing the diverse culture to the rest of the world. This would motivate the tourists world over to visit the valley to have a glimpse of the tribal culture and costumes. Before the tunnel was dedicated to the nation, there were only about 71 Home Stay and today there are over 450 homestays catering to the needs of the tourists.
Snow Festival, one of the longest festivals in the world, was organized to revive the ancient arts, culture, sports, traditions, clothes, music, and cuisines of the Lahaul-Spiti district. The traditional festivals of the district which are generally celebrated in the winter season were also included under this festival. Many festivals and events, which were forgotten by the residents, were celebrated after decades.
People from different parts of Lahaul cooked, showcased, and sold their respective traditional cuisines most of which are not available to buy in any shop. Both veg and non-veg cuisines, which have not been tested by most people from outside the Lahaul-Spiti district, were available at the Sissu helipad.
Snow Festival of Lahaul-Spiti, which completed its 75 days on Monday, has become the longest and largest winter festival in the country. The unique thing about this festival, involving a large number of resources and manpower, is that the district administration has not spent a single rupee on government funds. Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur while virtually addressed the concluding function of the Snow Festival of Lahaul-Spiti district from Shimla on Monday and congratulated the residents and local authorities for successfully conducting the festival.
